Location:
New York -- Central Park -- Conservatory Water
Kertész has created the playful yet somber image of a figure carrying a model boat near Conservatory Water, an ornamental pool in Central Park still famous for its use as a model boat pond. The boathouse pictured here, where the public could store model boats, no longer stands; a more elaborate red brick building replaced the wooden structure in 1954. Kertész labeled other copies of this photograph “Homing Ship.” The image perfectly captures the mood of Kertész’s first decade in New York: lonely, melancholic, searching.
