Handwritten letter dated 3 September 1878, apparently in response to a request for explication by Mr. McGowan. At issue is the following devise (written across top of letter): "To James Graham as his own, but if he should die without having male heir, then to William, his brother." Minor applies the laws of England and various states to arrive at possible outcomes. The letter appears unfinished - it is not signed.
