Abstract: Mary Cowan had alleged before sheriff of Kirkcudbright that Mac Candlish had fathered her son in 1765, and obtained an oder that he pay child support. Mac Candlish claims that her case was unproven, and that the sheriff had acted improperly in taking depositions from two witnesses when neither Mac Candlish nor his procurator were present.
