Negotiation scene during the 1980 Essex County Jail siege, in which nearly 100 inmates took over two floors in the jail and held several guards hostage. During negotion scenes, inmates wrapped white towels over their heads and shouted obscenities through broken windows. Eventually a settlement was reached and the hostages were released.

Wendy Miller and Sharon J. Moses were charged with smuggling guns into the Essex County Jail. Inmates used the weapons to take control of two floors of the jail in an excape attempt. The siege that followed resulted in hostage taking and significant destruction of state property.
