Handwritten notes taken by E. Barrett Prettyman, Jr. on a torn page from an address book, with the following explanatory note: "These are notes I made at 3:15am one morning in late March, 1955, just before Justice Harlan was sworn in. The caller, one John Handbury, was telephoning me from Chicago to say that Justice Harlan had killed a friend of his in Florida in 1936 while driving drunk. Handbury said he would stop the confirmation. The Justice turned it over to the FBI the next day."
